Generative Engine Optimization: Get Named When the AI Answers

More buyers start with a generated answer than a list of links. That answer names a short list of businesses.

How we operate

  • No % of ad spend. Ever.

  • No contracts. Cancel anytime.

  • Guaranteed geo & market exclusivity.

What this is

The shortlist is now written before anyone visits a website

Ask an AI system who to hire for something in your city and it will not hand back ten links. It will name a few businesses, describe them, and cite a handful of sources. That short list is a shortlist, and it is being produced before the buyer has visited anybody.

Generative engine optimization is the work of being on it. Not by gaming a ranking, because there is no ranking to game, but by being the kind of source these systems find, trust, and reach for when assembling an answer.

It is early, it is genuinely hard to measure, and it attracts more confident nonsense than any other part of marketing right now. This page is about what actually influences it and what nobody can promise.

GEO vs LLMO

Two Different AI Visibility Problems

One is about your category. The other is about your name. They need different work.

What we do

Retrievable, Quotable, Corroborated

In that order. Skipping the first makes the other two irrelevant, and skipping the third is why most GEO work stalls.

Be retrievable

A generative answer is assembled from sources it can find. Step one is being in that pool.

Classic search foundations

Most generative systems retrieve from live search. If you do not rank for the underlying query, you are rarely in the set of sources considered at all.

Crawler access

AI crawlers are separate from Googlebot and are frequently blocked by accident. We check what you allow, and make the choice deliberate either way.

Machine-readable facts

Structured data and clean markup so services, areas, prices, and credentials can be parsed rather than inferred from marketing prose.

Be worth quoting

Retrieval gets you considered. Being quotable gets you cited.

Original evidence

Data, ranges, and specifics that exist nowhere else. Generative answers reach for concrete claims and skip pages that only restate the obvious.

Self-contained passages

Sections that make sense lifted out of context, because that is exactly how they will be used. Content that only works read in order rarely survives synthesis.

Attributable expertise

Named people, credentials, and dates. When a system decides which of five similar sources to name, accountability is a tiebreaker.

Be corroborated

The part most GEO offerings skip, and the part that decides it.

Third-party presence

Directories, trade publications, local press, and review platforms. A claim repeated across independent sources is treated very differently from a claim made only by you.

Consistent facts

The same name, address, service list, and positioning everywhere you appear. Contradictions across sources make a business harder to summarise confidently.

Being talked about

Reviews, mentions, and discussion. Systems trained and retrieving on the open web reflect what the web says about you, not what your homepage claims.

How we work

How a GEO Engagement Runs

  1. Baseline

    Test what they say now

We start by running the questions your buyers would actually ask across the major generative surfaces, and recording what comes back. Without that baseline there is no way to tell later whether anything changed.

    We capture:

    • Which businesses get named for your core commercial questions
    • Whether you appear at all, and in what role
    • Which sources are being cited, since those are the properties worth being present on
    • How much answers vary between runs of the same question
    • Anything inaccurate being said about you, which is an LLMO problem and gets routed there

Answers vary between runs, so we sample repeatedly rather than screenshotting once and calling it a finding.

  2. Access

    Fix retrieval

Crawler permissions, structured data, and the classic search foundations that decide whether you are in the candidate pool. This part is unglamorous and frequently where the whole problem lives.

A surprising number of sites asking about AI visibility are blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt without knowing it, or are absent from the underlying search results the system retrieves from.

  3. Evidence

    Publish what is worth citing

We build the specific, checkable content that generative answers prefer: real numbers, defined terms, direct comparisons, and answers that stand alone when lifted.

This overlaps heavily with answer engine optimization, which is why the two are usually run together. Clear extractable answers are also the passages most likely to be synthesised and cited.

  4. Presence

    Build corroboration

Getting your facts consistent and your business present across the independent sources these systems read: directories, review platforms, industry listings, and local coverage.

This is the slowest part and the least controllable, and it is what separates businesses that get named from businesses that merely have a good website.

  5. Measure

    Re-test and report honestly

We re-run the same question set on a schedule and report the change in how often you are named and cited, with the variance shown rather than smoothed away.

Where a number moved because the platform changed rather than because of our work, we say so. This field has too much confident measurement of things nobody can measure.

What Nobody Selling GEO Wants to Tell You

This is the newest service we offer and the one with the most inflated claims around it. If you are going to spend money here, these are the things worth knowing first.

Nobody can guarantee a citation

These systems are probabilistic. Ask the same question twice and you can get different businesses named. Any agency guaranteeing you a place in AI answers is either misunderstanding the technology or counting on you not to check twice.

What can be done is improving the conditions that make citation more likely, then measuring across many runs. That is a real service. It is just not a guarantee, and it should not be priced like one.

Most of it is SEO wearing a new label

The uncomfortable truth is that a large share of what improves generative visibility is work that was already good practice: rank for the query, structure content clearly, mark it up properly, be consistent about who you are, and get referenced by credible third parties.

We would rather say that than sell you a separate product with a new acronym for work you may already be paying us to do. Where GEO adds something genuinely new is crawler access decisions, writing passages built to survive being lifted out of context, and testing what the systems currently say.

The measurement is weak, and pretending otherwise is the tell

There is no Search Console for generative answers. No impression counts, no position data, no reliable click attribution. What exists is sampling: ask a fixed set of questions repeatedly and count how often you appear.

That is a legitimate method with real limits. It is a sample, not a census, and results move for reasons unrelated to anything anyone did. Any vendor presenting a precise proprietary score for AI visibility is presenting a number whose accuracy they cannot demonstrate.

Traffic today is small, and often zero-click

For most local service businesses, referral traffic from AI surfaces is still modest next to classic search, and a good share of the value never produces a visit at all. Someone gets the shortlist, then searches your name directly.

That makes the honest case for GEO a positional one rather than a traffic one. Becoming an established source while the field is unsettled is easier than displacing an established one later. That is a real argument, and it is not the same as "this will fill your calendar next quarter".

Where it genuinely earns its budget

Considered purchases where buyers research before choosing. Categories where being on a shortlist is the whole battle. Businesses already visible in classic search, since retrieval leans on it heavily.

If none of that describes you, we will tell you to put the money into lead generation and come back to this later. It will still be here, and you will be in a better position to compete for it.

Why us

What Makes This Different

  • No invented scores

We report how often you are named across a fixed question set, sampled repeatedly, with variance visible. Not a proprietary "AI visibility index" nobody can audit.

  • We will tell you to wait

If you are not ranking for the underlying queries, GEO is premature. Retrieval mostly draws on search, so the honest first step is often ordinary SEO.

  • Nothing that risks your site

No cloaking, no prompt-injection tricks, no content written for machines that embarrasses you in front of a customer. Tactics that survive one algorithm cycle are not a strategy.

  • Run with AEO and SEO

The same structural work feeds all three. Selling GEO as a standalone product is mostly a pricing decision, not a technical one.

  • One client per market

Generative answers name a short list. We will not spend our effort getting two competing businesses onto the same one.

  • Flat fees

No percentage of ad spend, and no incentive to oversell an emerging channel because it justifies a bigger budget.

Questions

Generative Engine Questions

GEO is the work of getting your business named and cited inside answers that AI systems generate, such as AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT search. It targets the sources an answer is assembled from rather than a position in a list of links.
